Dianthus banaticus (Heuff.) Borbas

Flora Europaea

perennial, H, 2n=30, diploid

xeric to mesoxeric, saxicole

endemic for Banat Mountains in south-western Romania

Festucion valesiacae, Stipo pulcherrimae-Festucetalia pallentis, Campanulo abietinae-Juniperetum (as an exception in the extrazonal low altitude 'subalpine' vegetation of Arjana crest, Cerna Mountains), Prunetalia

R34and R31 saxicole habitats from Banat

A highly controversial taxon which was once subordinated as a subspecies to Dianthus giganteus D'Urv. but from which it differs a lot. In our opinion it is much more related to Dianthus carthusianorum L. as actually the original discoveror of the taxon considered (Dianthus carthusianorum L. var. banaticus Heuffel). It is also rather clear that it is closely related also with Dianthus cruentus Grisebach, which is the replacer of Dianthus carthusianorum L. in the Balkans and western Turkey. Most probably this species / subspecies will be soon found also in Serbia.
